Baptism Preparation

Your baby’s baptism is a time for celebration and joy. And, naturally, you want the best for your baby. We hope to help plan and prepare for the baptisms in the best possible way.  Some people think of baptism simply as something else to “get done”. They speak of baptism as having the baby “done”. That’s unfortunate, as baptism is the birth into the Christian Community and is in every way as solemn and important as birth itself. It’s an event that needs to be prepared for.

Your most important preparation is to look at your own faith. Your baby will be born with your features and will pick up your mannerisms. As he or she gets older your child will grow up, too, with your faith. The very fact that you have asked to have your baby baptized is a sure sign that you recognize the importance of God in your life. From the earliest days, children too young to answer for themselves have been baptized, usually as they accompanied their parents into the church, for the Church recognizes the desire of Christian parents to share the life of Christ with their children. Jesus Christ like you, wants the best for your child. Your efforts will not only help your baby grow up in the love of God; they will also help you to grow. As you teach your child to pray, you yourself will deepen your prayer; as you teach your child to appreciate the Mass, your own faith will be enriched. Your baby’s baptism is only the beginning of a new life in which you will grow closer to one another in the family and close to God. The Church welcomes your child into its midst with love and prayers for the future peace and happiness of your family in years ahead.

Baptism Preparation is a pre-requisite for all parents seeking to baptize their children. Please contact the parish office at 780-998-3288 two to three months prior to the baptism of your child to register.  Classes are held at O.L.A. at 10:00 am every First Saturday of the month. (No classes during the summer months of July and August)  Baptisms are held during regularly scheduled Masses.

Baptism

• A  copy of the child’s Birth Certificate is required with both parent’s names listed.
• The consent form to Baptize the child must be signed by both parents: the birth mother and birth father or the legally adoptive mother and legally adoptive father.

Godparents / Sponsors

• One Godparent, male or female, is sufficient; but there may be two, one of each gender.
• A Godparent must be 16 years of age, have received the three Catholic Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, the Eucharist, and Confirmation, and actively practice their faith.
• A Baptized person who belongs to another Christian denomination (eg. Anglican, Lutheran, United Church, etc.) may be admitted as long as there is one Catholic Godparent. This person is not to be called a Godparent, but is considered a witness to the Baptism.
• The Godparent and witness should not be of the same gender.
• A non-Baptized person may not serve as either a Godparent or a witness to baptism.

Questions Frequently Asked by Godparents

What is the role of a Godparent / Sponsor?
Godparents fulfill several roles:

• They are the official representatives of the Christian community who “Sponsor” the child for initiation into the Church. Together with the parents, they present the child for Baptism.
• They act as Catholic role models for the child whom they sponsor.
• They are to assist the parents in the Christian up-bringing of the child.

Can anyone be a Godparent?
Because of the important roles which the Godparents / Sponsors fill, the Church requires that they meet certain criteria. A Godparent must be 16 years of age, have received the three Catholic Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, the Eucharist, and Confirmation, and actively practice their faith. A Godparent is one who can truthfully answer the question put to them in the Baptism ritual: “Are you ready to help these parents in their duty as Christian mothers and fathers?”

Can a non-Baptized person be a godparent?
No – because it is not possible for a non-Baptized person to be a Christian role model, to help in the Christian up-bringing of the Child, or to make the Christian profession of faith required of Godparents.

Please refer to the information below which outlines the preparation process, including;  role of families and important information. 

Role of families: Your child’s first and most important teacher. 

Some things to remember: 

• CCC 2221 “The role of parents in education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute. The right and the duty of parents to educate their children are primordial and inalienable.”

• Sacrament: an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace. The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of our Christian life. The Sacraments of the Church are tangible signs of the sacred. The Sacraments are not only a sign of God, but they are a sign of God’s action in our world.

• First Reconciliation: The Sacrament of Reconciliation restores the sanctifying grace that has been lost. Reconciliation removes the barrier that has kept the Holy Spirit outside and once again gives entrance to God's life-giving love.

• First Eucharist: First Holy Communion is considered one of the holiest and most important occasions in a Roman Catholic person's life. It is the first time that a person receives the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, which is the eating of consecrated bread and drinking of consecrated wine.

First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are offered when a child is grade 2 or older.  First Communion means that this will be the first time that a child is participating “fully” in the Mass by receiving the Eucharist. Just like we begin every Mass by praying the Penitential (Act of Contrition) to prepare our hearts to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, First Reconciliation must be completed prior to First Holy Communion. If your child has not been baptized yet, please contact parish office first.

Confirmation

Confirmation Preparation is open to children grade 6 and older. (If your child this age has not yet celebrated First Reconciliation or First Eucharist, they can also prepare for and celebrate those sacraments during their preparation for Confirmation. PLEASE contact church office)

Confirmation Preparation is for children grades 6-8.

 Fee for Confirmation $75

 

This year, Father Christopher and Father Abraham with our Sacrament coordinator Justine Wright (along with a team of dedicated volunteers), will be journeying with our students who will be receiving Sacraments this coming school year. CLASSES FOR ALL THE SACRAMENTS will be at  Our Lady of the Angels Parish  on the same evening (different rooms for each class).  Celebrations will be on different dates of each other.

Congratulations!  You have made one of the most exciting and important decisions you will ever make.  Part of your wedding planning includes choosing your wedding liturgy, the reading, music and prayers that reflect your faith, your hope and your love for each other.

Couples planning to be married are encouraged to contact the parish office as soon as they become engaged. Preparation is a pre-requisite for all couples seeking marriage in the Catholic Church.

Annulments: If you are divorced and wish to make inquiries regarding the annulment process, please contact the parish office.

 

Anointing of the sick is for those who are suffering from serious illness, the elderly, or those undergoing major surgery. It is readily available for anyone who becomes seriously ill. Please inform the parish office of family members who are patients in hospital so that visits can be arranged. The Sacrament of the Sick can also be arranged through pastoral care at the hospital.

Holy Orders is the sacrament instituted by Christ for the service of leadership in the Church. Jesus chose twelve Apostles, he called them to follow him. He taught them to appreciate the love of the Father and the secrets of his kingdom. After his resurrection, he sent them into the whole world to teach the good news and baptize and sanctify the believers through the power of the Holy Spirit.

As Catholics we are called to pray that God may continue to send many workers into the world to gather his abundant harvest. Our Archdiocese of Edmonton is committed to the pastoral priority of promoting a culture of vocations, particularly to the priesthood and consecrated life.

Catholic parents are encouraged to pray together as a family and educate their children to seek the will of God in their life as true joy and fulfillment. Our whole community will accompany young people in their discernment for signs of vocations. But young people who experience the desire of becoming a priest need the support and encouragement of a spiritual director and guide. Our archbishop writes that we must not hesitate and be shy about inviting young people to discern carefully the will of God with trust.

The greatest gift that our parish family can offer to God and the Church is one or more priests and religious sisters to fulfill the call of Christ. The journey to the priesthood starts with a single step led by a great hope. Jesus says, “Be not afraid.”
