At Our Lady of the Angels, we are happy to be able to celebrate all the different stages of you and your families life in Christ. We have excellent preparation programs for the Sacraments. Below is information about how to begin preparing for the Sacraments.


Baptism
Baptism Preparation Your baby’s baptism is a time for celebration and joy. And, naturally, you want the best for your baby. We hope to help plan and prepare for the baptisms in the best possible way. Some people think of baptism simply as something else to “get done”. They speak of baptism as having the baby “done”. That’s unfortunate, as baptism is the birth into the Christian Community and is in every way as solemn and important as birth itself. It’s an event that needs to be prepared for. Your most important preparation is to look at your own faith. Your baby will be born with your features and will pick up your mannerisms. As he or she gets older your child will grow up, too, with your faith. The very fact that you have asked to have your baby baptized is a sure sign that you recognize the importance of God in your life. From the earliest days, children too young to answer for themselves have been baptized, usually as they accompanied their parents into the church, for the Church recognizes the desire of Christian parents to share the life of Christ with their children. Jesus Christ like you, wants the best for your child. Your efforts will not only help your baby grow up in the love of God; they will also help you to grow. As you teach your child to pray, you yourself will deepen your prayer; as you teach your child to appreciate the Mass, your own faith will be enriched. Your baby’s baptism is only the beginning of a new life in which you will grow closer to one another in the family and close to God. The Church welcomes your child into its midst with love and prayers for the future peace and happiness of your family in years ahead. Baptism Preparation is a pre-requisite for all parents seeking to baptize their children. Please contact the parish office at 780-998-3288 two to three months prior to the baptism of your child to register. Classes are held at O.L.A. at 10:00 am every First Saturday of the month. (No classes during the summer months of July and August) Baptisms are held during regularly scheduled Masses. Sacrament-of-Baptism_Brochure.pdf Baptism A copy of the child’s Birth Certificate is required with both parent’s names listed. The consent form to Baptize the child must be signed by both parents: the birth mother and birth father or the legally adoptive mother and legally adoptive father. Godparents / Sponsors One Godparent, male or female, is sufficient; but there may be two, one of each gender. A Godparent must be 16 years of age, have received the three Catholic Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, the Eucharist, and Confirmation, and actively practice their faith. A Baptized person who belongs to another Christian denomination (eg. Anglican, Lutheran, United Church, etc.) may be admitted as long as there is one Catholic Godparent. This person is not to be called a Godparent, but is considered a witness to the Baptism. The Godparent and witness should not be of the same gender. A non-Baptized person may not serve as either a Godparent or a witness to baptism. Questions Frequently Asked by Godparents What is the role of a Godparent / Sponsor? Godparents fulfill several roles: They are the official representatives of the Christian community who “Sponsor” the child for initiation into the Church. Together with the parents, they present the child for Baptism. They act as Catholic role models for the child whom they sponsor. They are to assist the parents in the Christian up-bringing of the child. Can anyone be a Godparent? Because of the important roles which the Godparents / Sponsors fill, the Church requires that they meet certain criteria. A Godparent must be 16 years of age, have received the three Catholic Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, the Eucharist, and Confirmation, and actively practice their faith. A Godparent is one who can truthfully answer the question put to them in the Baptism ritual: “Are you ready to help these parents in their duty as Christian mothers and fathers?” Can a non-Baptized person be a godparent? No – because it is not possible for a non-Baptized person to be a Christian role model, to help in the Christian up-bringing of the Child, or to make the Christian profession of faith required of Godparents.


2026 Reconciliation & First Eucharist Registration Information
Dear Families, We are so blessed to be able to journey with you and your child on their Sacramental Journeys. Father Carlos and our Sacramental Prep team are here to accompany you and your child. Please refer to the information below which outlines the preparation process, including; role of families and important information. Role of families: Your child’s first and most important teacher. Reconciliation removes the barrier that has kept the Holy Spirit outside and once again gives entrance to God's life-giving love. First Eucharist: First Holy Communion is considered one of the holiest and most important occasions in a Roman Catholic person's life. It is the first time that a person receives the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, which is the eating of consecrated bread and drinking of consecrated wine. Holy Spirit associated with Confirmation are strengths (or virtues) that Christian living
requires if it is to be fruitful and complete.

Marriage
Congratulations! You have made one of the most exciting and important decisions you will ever make. Part of your wedding planning includes choosing your wedding liturgy, the reading, music and prayers that reflect your faith, your hope and your love for each other. Couples planning to be married are encouraged to contact the parish office as soon as they become engaged. Preparation is a pre-requisite for all couples seeking marriage in the Catholic Church. Annulments: If you are divorced and wish to make inquiries regarding the annulment process, please contact the parish office.


Anointing of the Sick
Anointing of the sick is for those who are suffering from serious illness, the elderly, or those undergoing major surgery. It is readily available for anyone who becomes seriously ill. Please inform the parish office of family members who are patients in hospital so that visits can be arranged. The Sacrament of the Sick can also be arranged through pastoral care at the hospital.


Holy Orders
Holy Orders is the sacrament instituted by Christ for the service of leadership in the Church. Jesus chose twelve Apostles, he called them to follow him. He taught them to appreciate the love of the Father and the secrets of his kingdom. After his resurrection, he sent them into the whole world to teach the good news and baptize and sanctify the believers through the power of the Holy Spirit. As Catholics we are called to pray that God may continue to send many workers into the world to gather his abundant harvest. Our Archdiocese of Edmonton is committed to the pastoral priority of promoting a culture of vocations, particularly to the priesthood and consecrated life. Catholic parents are encouraged to pray together as a family and educate their children to seek the will of God in their life as true joy and fulfillment. Our whole community will accompany young people in their discernment for signs of vocations. But young people who experience the desire of becoming a priest need the support and encouragement of a spiritual director and guide. Our archbishop writes that we must not hesitate and be shy about inviting young people to discern carefully the will of God with trust. The greatest gift that our parish family can offer to God and the Church is one or more priests and religious sisters to fulfill the call of Christ. The journey to the priesthood starts with a single step led by a great hope. Jesus says, “Be not afraid.”


Funerals
Preparing the funeral of someone who love is an act of love. For Catholic Christians, this loving act also expresses our faith in the power of Jesus’ resurrection. This love and faith are central to what death means to a Christian. Life is changed, not ended – those who die pass through death to new life in God. In God, our bonds of love remain intact. During this time of sorrow and grief, you are not alone. The Christian community walks with you, supporting you. Please contact the Parish office at 780-998-3288 to make funeral arrangements.


RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults/Children
The R.C.I.A./R.C.I.C. is a journey in faith taken by those who believe themselves called by the Lord to the sacraments of initiation (baptism, confirmation and Eucharist) and to life in the Roman Catholic community. Typically taking about a year, the journey involves meeting together to reflect upon the Word of God each Sunday, and finding one evening per week to deepen knowledge of the faith. By journeying with those who are in the R.C.I.A./R.C.I.C. many of us “cradle” Catholics find a wonderful opportunity to deepen our own relationship with the Lord and His people. Sponsors meet with the candidates one on one, journeying with them, supporting them and offering whatever help they can. Catechists are people who are not necessarily learned in theology or Scripture, but are people who are willing to tell others about their own experiences of following the Lord. Hospitality people are always on hand to help to make the experience a warm, relaxing and friendly one. They usually sit in on the sessions and enjoy “what falls from the table.” R.C.I.A. involves four periods that focus on faith development of the individual: Pre-Catechumenate or Inquiry Period A time to “Come and See” (Jn 1:39) A time to ask “Why do Catholics….. A time to become comfortable with the group A time to discern what one is called to do Catechumenate Period A time to listen to and hear God’s Word A time to learn about Catholic tradition A time of prayer A time to discover how Catholic Christians are called to live their faith Period of Purification and Enlightenment A time of prayer A time to acknowledge what needs to change in one’s life A time of spiritual and personal growth A time of preparation for the initiation into the Catholic faith at the Easter Vigil Period of Mystagogia A time to reflect on our “Easter Experience” A time to deepen our understanding of the mysteries of faith A time to savor the sacramental life that we now share with our brothers and sisters in faith A time to discern which ministry one is being called to be in order to be a full and active member of O.L.A.’s Faith Community How long does this journey or process take? At O.L.A. parish, the RCIA process begins in September. The length of the journey depends solely on the individual. Adults are initiated into our Faith Community at the Easter Vigil each year. Who participates in this process? All are welcome! Those seeking to learn about God, Jesus and His Church and those searching for meaning in their lives are accompanied by members of O.L.A. parish on this journey. These members share their faith as catechists, sponsors, hospitality persons. They offer support by sharing the journey. Spouses, fiancees, other family members and friends are welcome to participate. When and where do we meet? Most gatherings are held at Our Lady of the Angels Church on Wednesday evening’s beginning in September. No gatherings on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The formal gatherings end in June. Regular attendance ensures a full and integrated faith formation. What can I do to join? For more information, please call the Parish Office at 780-998-3288. CIC - RCIA Adapted for Children is a process designed for unbaptized children and youth between 7 and 16 years of age. Parents and sponsors journey along with the children during the time of formation in preparation for initiation into the Catholic Faith through Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. We also include in this group those children who were baptized in another Christian tradition and who are asking to become full members of the Catholic Church. They make a Profession of Faith in the Catholic Church before being admitted to the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.
